The Birdcatcher 2002

‘How can the bird that is born for joy
Sit in a cage and sing’
   William Blake

Deep in the forest, a Birdcatcher hunts – plump birds for the eating and pretty birds for the plucking – until one day he discovers the beauty of one bird’s song.

The story of The Birdcatcher’s changing relationship to nature and how compassion brings its reward is vividly brought to life by a dancer, puppeteer and musician.

An imaginative show for children over the age of 6, where a flickering fan becomes a fluttering wing and the dance is summoned by a shimmering array of percussion.

The Birdcatcher…basks in that basic fear-cum-fascination with magic and shadows that gave the earliest fairy-tales their power. Told entirely through dance, music and puppetry, this is an immensely pretty tale that, at best, feels like a leather –bound volume of Grimm fairy-tales brought to life. Dancer Shamita Ray’s sure, simple steps are effective in evoking everything from magical forests to exotic birds; Shane Connolly’s bent-over gnarled, life-sized puppet is suitably shady; Mike Zolker’s percussion-based music has the feel of a faraway, enchanted land; while Keiko Mukaide’s set of Japanese-style screens and Grahame Gardner’s lighting conjure a beautifully dappled forest of overgrown foliage with trails of brilliant fireflies.

There is no doubt that The Birdcatcher was something extra special.
